Misconceptions
of Body Modifications In Different Cultures:
Body modification
is defined by Merriam-Webster, as the intentional alteration of the human body
for religious, aesthetic, or social reasons. Some people are forced to change
their body due to their believes and are not given a choice as to what it is or
how it is done. People who are not educated on these culture modifications tend
to place immediate judgment on them.
Culture is defined as the
beliefs, customs, and arts of a particular society. That particular part of the
society can have its own beliefs, ways of life, and art. Some people do not
realize that there are many types of cultures. There are also different
environments that one may live their life in. When other cultures view all
these different body modifications they are unaware that there are people who
practice these things. It may seem odd to them but it is normal in that
specific culture.
There are many
misconceptions that come from body modifications. The first being that people
who have them are committing a sin to their body. The bible states in 1
Corinthians 3:16-17, " Do you not
know that you are Gods temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you? If anyone
destroys God's temple, God will destroy him. For God's temple is holy, and you
are that temple." Many people who follow the bible believe that it is a
sin and that is why when they see people with body modifications they are quick
to judge.
How
People Outside of Certain Cultures View These Modifications:
When someone who
is not involved in the Indian culture sees someone who has nose plugs, they
would be a little thrown off at first site because it is not a common feature
that most people uphold. When someone sees something that is out of the norm
they quickly assume it is not right. The issue that people have is that they
are not completely educated on the purpose of these modifications. When doing
an interview at Shepherd University, people were asked their opinions, majority
of people were disgusted by these modifications; however, people from these
tribes modify their body for a purpose in life.
Since there are many
different cultures in the world, each culture has their way of living. The
different body modifications show how each culture lives day to day and year to
year.
